Community Shops South Tyneside
Are you looking to reduce your household food bill? Want high-quality, food items, the same as you would buy in Supermarkets but at hugely discounted prices? Do you want to support a local charity whilst saving money on shopping? Your Community Shops South Tyneside might be the answer.
At least 350 households purchased from us every single week in 2025; saving the community more than £400,000 over 17,467 visits! Profits from our Community Shops support our ongoing Crisis Support. In addition, in Feb 2026 our Fowler Street Shop extended its hours to include Fridays.
And, of course, our Community Shops offer much more than affordable food. They’re spaces to connect, which create a sense of belonging and friendship; crucially, they provide opportunities for residents to reconnect.
What is a H&H Community Shop?
Our community shop sells fresh, dry, frozen & canned food items for a suggested minimum donation of £5 with additional top-up items such as soap powder and toilet rolls also available for a small additional donation. The foods we sell are the same foods you would see on the shelves in well-known national supermarket retailers such but available to you at well below the RRP (recommended retail price). All items are in date, and of the highest quality.
Who can be a member?
Each household is allowed one membership, which allows you to visit once a week. You must live within a mile and a half of the community shop. Membership is free, it is not means tested (you don’t need to be on any benefits) and becoming a member is easy; just bring along a valid form of ID (driving licence, utility bill etc) & our lovely, passionate staff will sign you up for savings and issue you a membership card, which you must bring with you every time you shop. You can only be a member of one shop, and you pay the first £5 when you choose your first shop.
Sadly, as the Cost-of-Living Crisis hits, many working families have found themselves struggling to buy the food their family needs. After all their household outgoings are paid. Our community shops can be a real bridge for your weekly shop, a “top up shop” as a cheaper alternative to the cost of regular supermarket shopping, which can help stop you reaching crisis point when you perhaps don’t have enough money for a supermarket shop. Shopping with us allows families to keep control and dignity, whilst shopping for nutritionally balanced foods, at highly reduced prices. It ensures you have control & choice & helps stretch you through to your next pay day. As your £5 cost is a donation to us, by shopping with us you are also donating to us as a charity, helping continue our life-changing work in your own community!
I live more than 1.5 mile from my closest shop, can I still be a shop member?
At Hospitality & Hope we strive to support the community of South Tyneside as much as possible. However, at the present time, residents/households situated more than 1.5 mile from their closest shop are unable to become either a shop member or wellbeing participant due to funding constraints. We apologise and ask that if you’re in any doubt as to whether you might qualify, please don’t hesitate to contact us and discuss.
How much is membership? What foods can I choose?
Membership is free. As a member, you will be given a membership card that allows you to shop with us once a week at our shop within a mile and a half of your home. Each week you can shop for up to 11 items for a suggested minimum donation of £5! Saving you a huge amount of money and helping your money stretch further, acting as a “top up shop” on top of your normal monthly food bill!
What type of foods do you stock?
We stock a wide range of core items, such as fresh fruit and frozen items, but we also look to rotate selections and choice every few weeks based on shopper feedback. Our Groceries are colour coded, to help you choose a range of nutritionally balanced items. Our friendly staff and volunteers are always on hand to help. In addition, we stock a range of “weekly offers” and “one time only” items, depending upon the new stock that arrives each week. Why not follow us on social media for our weekly updates?
Why is the food so cheap?
We can offer this food at huge discounts thanks to our partnership with a national charity who are the largest single site food distribution charity in Europe. We buy in bulk, large volumes of Supermarket brand food, at highly discounted rates, so we can pass on huge savings to members in the areas of our community that need it most. We also receive external funding from South Tyneside Council to supplement our operating costs.
We are also deeply appreciative of the local support we receive directly from our local community who regularly gift us overstocked or short life produce. Out local supporters are Morrisons Jarrow, Seaburn & South Shields; as well as Iceland, Aldi, ASDA Boldon and ASDA South Shields.
None of the food in our shops is the food that is donated to our food bank. Our Food Bank donations are kept separate and only used for our emergency food bank parcels. This includes donated food at our local food collections.
