Supported Housing South Tyneside
Our supported housing South Tyneside service provides safe accommodation and tailored support that helps people move away from homelessness in South Shields. In addition, we focus on stability, life skills and a planned move into independent living.
Are you an individual who is currently homeless? Do you know an individual who may be homeless or sleeping rough or sofa surfing. Have you suffered a relationship breakdown with family and friends? Need support around domestic violence or abuse?
Having originally begun with just 5 beds, we recently expanded our service to incorporate beds for 15 residents. In addition, we opened our doors as part of a brand new protocol for South Tyneside Council; the SWEP (Severe Weather Emergency Protocol) programme, welcoming 68 homeless individuals in from the bitter cold over 18 nights to date; supporting them in dangerous weather conditions. This programme continues during the current harsh weather forecasts we’re experiencing.
At Hospitality & Hope, we believe everyone deserves a warm, safe space to sleep at night. With a provision of 15 beds our Head of Housing & Support Teri Watson and her dedicated specialist team provide this critical support every day of the year.
Many of our residents have complex needs, mental health and substance abuse challenges. Working to a tailored support plan, each individual is assigned a key worker who through weekly one-to-ones, group workshops and certificated training seek to develop core life skills and qualifications that enables them to move onto a position of independent living.
With two dedicated move-on properties our support model offers a second chapter to each resident’s journey with us. Building on the firm foundations established within their first few months with us, our H&H team continue their great work drawing alongside every resident to help further develop confidence, and skills that have real long term, life-changing outcomes for those who are ready and committed to seek and embrace change.
At Hope & Hospitality, we are fully committed to providing critical stepping stones to independent living and recognise we cannot achieve this alone. We are therefore proud of our Strategic Partnerships who together aim to influence and educate positive change both within our community and at a Borough wide level on issues that impact Homelessness, mental health and addiction.

Supported Housing South Tyneside – A Case study – Success for Mr T.
Mr T was not originally from South Tyneside but following a custodial sentence he made the decision not to return to his home area, due to family issues and relationships breakdowns.
From the outset Mr T showed self-determination and the personal ambition and drive to want to succeed, to get a job and to develop his financial management skills and independent life skills. However, shortly after his tenancy commenced Mr T suffered a close family bereavement.
This impacted on his mental health, and he was understandably very low. At this time Mr T started reconnecting and repairing relationships with family in Liverpool, which proved to be a positive step in managing his grieving process.
We provided additional and intensive support for Mr T including assisting with a self-refer to lifecycles, a mental health and a bereavement support group. Staff also spent a huge amount of time supporting Mr T and promoting his emotional wellbeing.
With our support Mr T completed a tenancy readiness programme and attended educational and employability courses, to develop a career pathway. This gave Mr T the confidence to apply for and secure employment in the local area.
This step change gave Mr T the belief that his life was now changing for the better and he then decided he was ready to move into his own accommodation and start a fresh chapter in his life.
You may wonder what happened to Mr T, well he continues to work, live well in his own accommodation and has now entered a positive long-term relationship.
