Our food hub South Tyneside space in Horsley Hill delivers free cooking courses, friendly demos and low cost homemade meals, plus links to our community shops and wider support in South Shields. Sessions build skills and confidence so households can cook healthy, low cost food.

“All Things Food”

The FOOD HUB is A BRAND-NEW VENTURE FOR 2025!

It is a food activity space with kitchen facilities, for up to twenty-eight people, with an informal snug seating area, and incorporates a community area selling and serving home cooked nutritious meals from just £2. There will also be a range of fresh, frozen, dried & tinned foods, for sale, at cost price to residents within 1.5miles of the shop. It is located next door to our Horsley Hill Community Shop and Activities Hub at 3 Horsley Hill Square, Horsley Hill, South Shields, NE34 7HE.

Access to Affordable Food

Our brand-new FOOD HUB will allow us to deliver workshops, relating to “All things food! Providing access to fresher food, with fun learning  around food budgeting, food preparation, food nutrition, food growth, to food life cycles and food futures. Designed to help residents make better food choices, and in the longer term contributing to generational change.   

The Hub will extend access to affordable food, increase knowledge and understanding of the benefits of healthy diet and generate a passion for food that will translate into developing skills to enable residents to cook healthier, affordable meals from scratch. 

Learning and Skills Development with FREE Workshops & Classes

Workshops will be delivered by a whole host of food practitioners, including local renowned restaurateurs.

Food Workshops are FUN & FREE; tuition is very informal. With step-by-step teaching, recipes for you to follow.

We provide the “Meal in a Bag” ingredients, which we gift to you. Workshops are  an ideal way to learn how to budget, learn how to cook new meals, sample new types of food and all of this at no cost to you. e.g. Recent classes and recipes are traditional British Recipes:  Indian Curry’s, Asian cooking, Italian: Children’s Pizza Making, Men’s Cooking Sessions.

Family cooking sessions can positively change how children feel about food, enhancing their future food knowledge and understanding. Workshops are FREE, fun, informal, and while they are based around food, they are also designed to help improve mental health and increase your confidence. In a familiar setting, you will meet new people in your area & make new friendships. Take part in activities and learn new skills, which support you and your family to succeed in life.

We are also working with Women’s Health South Tyneside WHIST & Apna Ghar South Shields | Apna Ghar Minority Ethnic Women’s Centre | England on a food project food fair. Food Fair Project – WHIST. This project encourages people across South Tyneside to find cheap, healthy food and start making their own delicious and healthy meals, using as little fuel as possible in the process.

By providing these Community HUB facilities, we aim to educate and create real generational change, help a community to develop new skills & experience inspirational education. We believe everyone, regardless of their home or financial circumstances, should have access to the support, tuition, and the encouragement they need to thrive.

Food Hub South TynesideMembership T&C’s

The Food Hub and will be open Monday to Friday and is located next door to the Community Shop. Everyone living within the catchment area of the Community Shop at Horsley Hill (living within a 1.5-mile radius of the shop) can become a member. Membership is FREE and requires proof of address and the completion of a membership form. There are no other joining criteria.

Membership also provides access to a wider programme of FREE wellbeing activities.

FOOD HUB SOUTH TYNESIDE GIVES BBC NEWCASTLE ACCESS TO

“Affordable, All Things Food”

Earlier this month, we were delighted to welcome BBC Radio Newcastle’s Gilly Hope to The Food Hub – All Things Food – to see our food activity space in action. Thank you for your visit.

During her visit, Gilly was able to experience our kitchen facilities, and visit a “food hub & shop that’s relevant to all & sits at the heart of the community

By providing this space, we aim to educate and create real generational change, help a community to develop new skills & experience inspirational education.
